Message:   If you go to Allpar and read about the early Hemi outputs and ratings, you'll see that they were VERY underpowered and only had a 7.1 compression rating. Remember these were the first V-8's.
It was Kiekoffer who began tweaking the early design to make it a fire breather. That very well may have been his intent from the start but it took a lot of tweaking with compression ratings, valve size, porting etc., inotherwords a TON of experimenting went into the motor to make it work at higher rpm. The first cams lasted about 5 minutes and that is NO exageration! = )
The Hemi now works at high rpm because it breathes almost perfectly.
If you look at early Poly torque figures, the wedge never came close in matching the numbers except for 360 Hi-Po versions and the high reving 340 (which has very poor low rpm numbers) which you rarely see in a truck because it doesn't like lugging. But you'll see plenty of early Hemi's in BIG Dodges, from the factory.
