Yes, it is possible [for others like Ron] to do a really fine job with a donor lip. Norm even mentioned in an email that there are aftermarket lips available for custom rodder use. Buttttt, there's a couple of things with the copper tubing trip:

The Townie's inner fender area is designed to be covered with a sheet metal wall at mid-inner fender line, from floors to windows, that hides everything from prying eyes. Also a donor fender is needed, which potentially means one less fender out there for the next guy that needs the whole thing for resto. Ron is highly skilled, but DON'T EVER TELL HIM I said so, which makes the job look easy. You at least have to use spot welds, or screws or Cleco's to attach, and then all the rest of welding it up anyway.

1st: Old Rollin' Thunder is in bad shape, so I'll remove rust with a rust converter & mechanical means, then:

With the copper tube I can form tube to lip contours. There are many diameters of tube available from 1/8" to 6" so all choices there, probably use 3/8". Once formed to curvatures the tube can then be slighty flattened as needed to get the right flare outward from outer fender wall. Fitted in place between inner and outer fender it only acts as a backer form for metal deposition with the MIG, spotting along to back-fill holes a bit at a time. I find I can flow metal with my machine so there's only about 1/32" bead buildup over weldment, so not a whole bunch to grind. Other methods require quite a bit of grinding also.

Grind down the weld beads, leave the copper in place, and it's ready for Tiger Hair. I bent up some steel rod stock for this but that requires flame heat and is kinda tough, so thinking copper might be easier. No, I'm not sure it will work but I wanted to share it with y'all in case you can do something with it. I'll give it a try soon as I can and let you know if/how it works, may be a simple solution to a common problem? As you know, I'm always looking for the Eeee-Zzzz way out hah! Thanks, guys!
