Message:   Most of garyo's problems were with the front suspension. Very little with the Diesel engine or the tranny. If that had been a gas truck, you'd had many of the same problems.

I've owned my '96 Cummins 3500 since 2000 (22K miles), and it now has 160K and is a daily driver:

Clutch, injector pump, front seal, and wastegate (140K)
Pitman arm, lower ball joints (158K)
Rear brake drums (155K)
Power brake booster (159K)
Fuel lift pump (129K)

That's not a lot of non-routine maintenance for 160K miles. Of course, there have been brakes, tires, batteries, valve adjustments, and oil changes.

All in all, mine has been what I'd consider a normal maintenance protocol for a 12-year-old Diesel pickup. I seriously doubt a gas truck would've lasted this long and worked like this truck has. A gas truck has an estimated service life of about 150K these days. You can double to quadruple that for the same truck in a Diesel. The Diesel truck pays for itself over and over again.
