Message:   there is a small coil in that relay, the small wires hook to the coil, you see the one side is tied to +12 VDC
the other side runs through your ignition switch to ground.
so here is what happens, you turn the ignition switch to the first position (run), this puts +12VDC on pretty much everything, like your coil, then you turn your key to the (start) position, this pulls "in" that relay (solenoid) and when that activates it connects the battery to the starter (large wires) and the starter turns, once running, you let loose of the key and it returns to the "run" position then it releases that solenoid and the starter disengauges from the flywheel.
the +12VDC remains to run the ignition and accesories
