Message:   with the motor off dead cold. id would plan on doing some cleaning while your in there like jimmie suggested. but....i have done my last 3 cold and it works fine. it does not have to be done with hot oil splashing on you and the smoke cloud that goes along with it. exhaust you set at 25 and intake you set at 14. this makes up for the expansion when the engine gets hot. i put a socket on the crank bolt and with the valve cover off i go valve by vale, i rotate the engine untill i see the intake start to open on the cylinder, thats when i adjust the exhaust, and visa versa, then walk my way around to all the cylinders. you may have to play with it a bit, the norprene gaskets are a good idea because they are reuseable. its an old motor, and there may be a cylinder or 2 that like a better adjustment. but, if you got time, try a couple different ones on all cylinders. go a little tighter, a little looser and see what your engine likes. the 22 and 12 setting is a guide line, not gospel. your poly will tell you what it likes by the way it runs. all it takes is the time to try it a few different ways. my old blue truck ran the best with a loose setting and just a shade of valve rattle, the crew cab liked them a bit tighter, the black truck seems to prefer straight up 22 and 12, every poly will have its preference. beleieve it or not you will get more power from the poly if you take the time to get the valve adjustment it likes. then be sure to write it doen somewhere for the next time.
