Message:   Jim,

I have not heard about not using synthetic oils for regular use until Norm mentioned it. I have seen about not using it for cam break-in. Synthetics are supposedly superior in nearly every way over dino oil. I can't say if that is really so or not. I have heard and read where mechanics pull an engine down that has been run on synthetics and they look like they have just been put together. Cross hatch still showing full length on the cylinder walls and no perceptible wear on bearings. I also recall reading some factory literature about no wear with synthetics but I can't point to that now. All of this is with the CI-4 oil since the the recent spec is just now showing up.

Everything I have read only seem to indicate it is a problem with cam break-in although it would seem to also affect regular daily lubrication. I would like to see where you read that also, Norm.

I can still find CI-4 Rotella at my local Wally World but not all of them have it still. I also found Wally World oil with the CI-4 rating but most of the others are out of stock.

I think that very soon the choice will be made for us as The CJ-4 will soon be the standard and CI-4 will no longer be available.
