Message:   Good answers!

I figured heat of course, that being the physical means that causes brakes to work and metal to warp. But it seems that from the design the heat should be distributed more evenly, and that might be the answer? That is, though runout measures the same on all dics or drums, but there's all kinds of thickness variance in the raw castings.

I'll bet it would help if brake drums were machined on the oustide as well as inside, for uniform thickness, so uniform heat transfer? Likewise rotors, especially vented rotors, are probably very inconsistent in casting thickness.

Interesting on the hard semi-metallic pads, Butch! Not the first complaint I've heard about them. No doubt they stop better but with wear on discs and drums they're for those who can afford them, and who can find replacement parts!

While we're on the subject of brakes: for the last many years I've been running my rear brakes quite a bit tighter. Not enough to make them heat up and induce fade, but a little more drag than normal. Sure makes a nice difference in braking! Pulls vehicle down evenly and quickly, instead of a careening nose dive.

Had even less careening nose dives when I gave up coke a few years back, speaking of putting on the brakes
