Message:   I have done something stupid, and need help recovering. I set out today to replace the seals and front bushing in an A904 transmission I want to install in my truck.

Here's the stupid part: I got the front pump seal out with no probs, and I had it in my mind that the bushing could be replaced from the front also, not realising that the front pump needs to be removed and disassembled to get the bushing out and in. So, being an idiot, I took and small hammer and a sharp punch and collapsed the bushing from the front and got it out.

When I couldn't get the new bushing tapped in from the front, it finally dawned on me that I wasn't doing this right and I needed to ask some questions. The guys on the slant six website told me that there is a special slide hammer used to remove the front pump and that the bushing is then installed from the rear.

OK. So I'm an idiot. I don't have this special slide hammer, or a shop manual, but I am truly committed to doing "something" because I've got the old bushing out and it's got to have a new one.

Can a suitable slide hammer be improvised from a regular one to remove the pump? Is there a source for A904 shop manuals? Can anyone help a brain-dead backyard "mechanic" out of a jam? Davey
