Message:   Interesting, JOHN. My Grandfather was Cpl. in a Howitzer emplacement, WWI. Came home touched in the head..died several yrs. later of dementia. Granny got Widow's benefits. My Dad was a Chief Petty Electrician, North Atlantic convoy escort duty, Corvette. One "Probable" sub sunk...could not turn on their searchlights in the dark to verify. He survived numerous trips...it was the poor buggers in the Liberty ships that took the brunt of the subs' attention. His best storey was about bread...or the lack of it. After a week at sea, there was 1 sq. in. of bread left after the mold was trimmed from a loaf!!! YUCK. That and powered eggs! Did they party when they hit Ireland, or what?
