Message:   Part of what we see today is a result of the German educational system. From a very early age a young person must choose their lifetime career and exact area of specialization. They are then put on a very narrow track specifically designed to prepare them for just that field of endeavor. It is very hard to change one's mind and career goals.

In America we have more of a liberal arts education with opportunity to spin off in hundreds of directons. Not so in Germany. Because of this an automotive engineer may have no real concept of body styling, or of marketing, or even of high performance ventures. The specialist groups within a corporation can get together but the separate cells only swap requirements rather than jointly barn storming a new concept.

At Daimler Benz AG the mechanical engineers come first and the design studios make it fit. This is seen in the carryover styling of Mercedes cars, long after the body design has been beat to death. Where it seems to us that they just don't 'get it' that's really very true! They've had blinders on their entire life so this American way is all new to them, and uncomfortable.
