Message:   Likely a case of Daimler/Chrysler standing in the doorway with her skirts hiked up wearing that alluring little smile. "Well hello there Mr. Big Boy Merger Man...." Even weak companies can buy in on a percentage, boosting their own company and fluffing up D/C's portfolio at the same time.

Historically the coprporate mergers between vehicle manufacturers have been more prolific in Europe than in the USA, though we have long a history as well. Over there it was more often based on a 'quickie' rather than the full-tilt merger. Probably what Daimler's looking for?
