There's no real rocket science in a street machine: just so oil pickup is correct distance from bottom of pan, pan has sufficient capacity in quarts, and pan and pickup clear crank throws you're good to go. You can shorten a pickup as long as it's securely welded to maintain a vacuum and face angle to pan remains the same [don't want cavitation]. Most say about 1/4" - 3/8" clearance between pickup face and pan is good from what I recall.
