Message:   Are you familiar with this engine? Did it run good and not smoke or knock before the head gasket blew? How do you expect to use it after you repair it? How many miles will the car be driven and how often? How long do you plan on keeping the car? How much will the car be worth after you repair the engine?
If you are familiar with the engine and know that it was running good and not smoking or knocking before why waste time and money doing things that don't need to be done. That engine should be good for 150K miles at least so if it only needs a head gasket, surfacing the head and a valve cleanup is all I would do. You said you couldn't feel the marks in the cylinder so it should be OK.
I know how to rebuild an engine properly but there's times when a minimum repair is the logical thing to do, keeping in mind how you will use the engine and how long you might keep it relative to the cost involved. A complete rebuild will cost a lot more than a head gasket replacement.
My thinking is that you match how much you spend against the results that you wish to achieve, although if you don't know anything at all about the engine it will be a gamble to do anything less than a rebuild.
