John's method only works if u have a camper special with the easy off tailgate. Worse, not all camper specials have them.
The rest of the trucks have the "next to impossible to remove" tailgates. U have to remove a pivot bracket on one of the sides. Held on by 2 #4 phillips flat head machine bolts, usually rusted in place. Get a #4 phillips bit socket and use a 3/8 drive ratchet. Helps to use an impact wrench too. Remove the taillights, reach inside and spray the ends of the bolts with PB blaster, let soak a couple weeks, then spray with WD40. The main problem with removal is the threads protruding thru the nut are highly corroded. The bolt will start, then jam when the corroded threads come thru the nut. Good luck
