Message:   Part of the issue is that over 40% of each barrel is used for gasoline, very little for diesel. As the diesel usage increases, the amount of gasoline derived from each barrel is decreased and since diesel is more efficient we will ultimately use less oil.
I think the 30% will prove to be low. The Blog about the Jeep Patriot getting 56 mpg is pretty close to what the VW TDI gets. The gas version of the Patriot gets 30 mpg, so that is nearly a 100% improvement (you do the math, I have a headache...ha! ha! ) There is a premium on motors right now because of the limited production numbers. Once diesel captures 25-30% of the market, you'll see the diesel option costing $1000 or less.
The bottom is falling out of the new car market, you might even see rebates on these vehicles to jump start sales.
The biggest attraction for the Liberty and Grand was the models with towing packages, many folks pull a travel trailer or tent trailer behind their Jeeps. With a diesel, that is effortless and has minimal impact of fuel consumption. In addition, that torque means you can accelerate quicker with less throttle effort, so you save fuel getting up to speed and save fuel once at your cruising speed.

This chart is in gallons per barrel.
