Message:   Any shortbed is deemed by the "Experts" to be more desirable than the more common longbeds. Utiline or stepside refers to the old-fashioned, single wall construction type of bed dating back to the 1930's or earlier. Typically a chain dogs the tailgate in place on both sides. It also has a step up into the bed in front of both rear wheels. Wood bed-floor construction can be quite pretty &/or cumbersome to maintain. Spare tire can be mounted on the exterior, ahead of the fender.

The double-wall bed is called Fleetside or smoothside in general. It is the modern update to the Utiline. Steel floor, no steps, modern handle-type tailgate, tire mounts under the floor, rear tailights are flushmounted.
