Message:   Excellent Seabee

As u said, a crack developed at the connection of the rod journal to the counterweight. This is evidenced by the smooth, hammered surfaces of the break. Any crack will be "worked" by the forces in the crank, which will hammer the metal, smoothing it, as well as cause the crack to grow. Notice no other break has a shiny, hammered surface.

It is interesting to see that the crank held together until only a very small amount of metal was still connected. Look at the picture and u will see a small sliver of virgin cast iron with its grainy appearance.
AT the final moment of total failure, the engine was at INCREASING rpm and turning around 2500-3000.

The rod journal came up underneath the counterweight, slamming into it, which tore the main boss, webbing, cap, and bolts right out of the block. There is damage along the entire straight edge of the counterweight. (sorry, I dont have a pic)
Also notice, the final position of the broken main and the rod journal. After their collision, the rod journal slammed into the block and stopped, the main punched into the pan and stopped.

This impact sent massive shock forces thru the 2 halves of the crank, which combined with forces from the firing cylinders, along with stored energy in the rotating mass of the flywheel, vibration damper, camshaft, etc., and BLEW THE REST OF THAT SUCKER APART!

So Seabee wins!
Do u want the forged crank for cost of shipping?

Fine print: Only 1 winner per competition. Prize will be awarded to winner exclusively and is not transferable. Forum employees are ineligible for prize. (sorry Norm) Family members are also ineligible. (sorry Killr) Competition is open to all forum participants, except any who have pissed me off in the last 30 days (sorry sheepboy) In the event of a tie, female participants will prevail (we were cheering for Jill, Brenda and a few others). Any decision by PWD is final, unless I change my mind. All rules have been disclosed and are acknowledged by participants, except those rules I forgot or haven't made up yet. And that's FINAL, for now.
