Message:   2 clues:

1. After reviewing the pic, I see the cause shows up well

2. It was knocking for 15 miles, from barely perceptible at first to horrific pounding at the end

If somebody gets it right, with a full explanation of the evidence and progression of the failure, they can have the forged crank for $50 (just enough to cover shipping)
