Message:   When I first moved to Idaho in 1971 the cities, counties and state roads were sanded. The sand was fine particle and did an excellent job of improving traction. Soon they were skimping on the crushing process and small pebbles were allowed in the mix. People complained about windshield damage and soon the roads were being treated with "chemical traction assist". This chemical was soium chloride, table salt. Recently they started using calcium chloride, and Norm is right, it is a form of salt. In fact since CC has been in use, older vehicles are falling apart. I won't even drive my W300 or W500 in the winter. The stuff even attacks copper wiring, trailer plugs, and any small dings in a newer truck's chrome soon become a bed of rust. I would much prefer a little rock chip and some icy spots any day than the crap they are subjecting us to. JH
