Message:   im not sure it can be done, i think, and this is only a thought, i have never taken one completely apart, its my understanding that a 2 speed motor has 2 sets of motor windings, one for hi and one for low ( different resistances), there is a limit switch or "home switch" that makes the motor stop at the same place every time.
not really sure how they do it for a variable speed motor. but one thing i do know is you have to drop 12 volts from the switch to ground somehow.
this means, that if you cut the voltage down on the motor you will raise it across the switch,
example, if the motor is running 100% then there will be little resistance on the switch and it will not have a voltage drop across it, if you cut the motor voltage to 50% then the switch has to drop the other 50 %, and if you have the motor running at 10% the the switch has to drop 90%...make sence?.. more voltage drop = more heat
if you put a variable switch on a 2 speed motor..uh, the first sign of trouble will be the large amount of smoke comming form the switch.
