Message:   The union has given GM and Ford, huge concessions with regards to the pension plans, medical and the multi-billion dollar unfunded liability. The union has refused to give the same concessions to Chrysler, causing Chrysler's overhead to balloon and putting Chrysler at a cost disadvantage. It cost more per vehicle, to pay for the union's fringe benefits than it does to buy steel. Chrysler wants an even playing field with it's competition, the union has dug in and refused. I would suspect that if the union does not concede that Chrysler will try to break the union.
Part of the reason Chrysler sold off so many subsidiaries was to rid itself of union contracts. They no longer control production schedules that way, but they do control costs that way.
