History
I am the third owner of this C3-PW Power-Wagon; purchased
in June of 2003. Bruce, the second owner bought it in 1977 when he was 17 years
old. He put about 10,000 miles on the truck and used it for a lawn mowing business,
hauling firewood, and general transportation. The plow rig shown in some of the pictures
was a hand pumped hydraulic unit with hand angle adjustment. It would be neat to have an
old plow setup like that now but it's long gone. The truck originally had 9.00x16 NDT tires
but as seen in the pictures were swapped for 7.50x16 with better tread. The spare, however,
is still a 9.00x16 NDT. Bruce and his father repainted the truck
in 1981 and kept the original color scheme, red with black fenders.
A few years ago Bruce started to disassemble the truck (see below bed pictures)
with the intention of fixing it up but didn't have the time to devote to the project.
I am very grateful to Bruce for keeping the truck in good condition under
cover all these years, for selling it to me, and for sharing these neat pictures!
The original owner, Farrell & Gregory of Pittsfield, Massachusetts,
bought the truck new and had it set up as a welding truck. They fabricated and installed
the rear bumper shown in some of the pictures. Bruce remembers talking
to some of the workers at the time he bought the truck. None of them wanted to use
the truck because it was so slow! It sat in the back of one of their buildings until
Bruce bought it. See below picture of a couple of Massachusetts registrations from 1973
and 1974.
Fred Lantz of Pittsfield, Massachusetts (Fred wrote an article about
his own truck, Truck Number 11, in the April 2003 issue of Power Wagon Advertiser) was kind
enough to do some research on Farrell & Gregory. Fred remembers the truck when Farrell & Gregory
owned it and always wondered what happened to it. The company was in the steel fabrication
business and also owned several huge cranes. Their original building is still standing on
East Street. Fred was able to talk to one of the owners, Mike Gregory.
Mike did remember owning the truck, that it was red with black fenders, and had a welder
mounted in the back. Unfortunately, he said all the business records and any photographs were
destroyed after the business closed in 1981. I am very grateful to Fred for taking the time to
do this research. At the very least it's nice to have the historical link between Fred and my
truck.
