I think you are correct on the change from C-3 to C-4. I have a C-4 and it is 12 volt (generator), and has the NP420 which is dated '56. Unfortunatly the engine is not original to the truck as it's dated '52 but it's still a 230ci motor anyways. It does have the second series bed. I dont know if it is correct or not, but I'm just going to say it is, because it's a early c-4 and could have had a leftover from the c-3 bed.
As far as 6 vs 12 volt. I think it's neither here nor there. For awhile I swore by the 12 volt conversion, then I figured out how to properly keep my original 6 volt stuff in adjustment. The '52 B-3 I just got already has a 12 volt alternator on it. I thought about switching back, but it sure is nice having all my vehicles running the same voltage. Plus it is set up for 12 volt turn signals, and has a trailer light connector, so it just makes sense for me to keep the 12 system. I think I will be putting in a fuse box though, for saefty's sake.
